Bob Dylan "art" - still taking the piss..
Lets face it - I'm not a Bob Dylan lover by any means: anyone who can "sing" in a way that enables him to simultaneously play the harmonica either has a Very Special Gift, or is relying on his fans' blind adulation. And why are they so enamoured with him? Its almost as bad as Apple Fanbois love of Steve Jobs - sorry that should have been "Love" - but Steve can't sing.. Suffice to say that when a certain Internet radio station that we listen to regularly plays a Bob Dylan set, the listener count drops  noticeably. I just believe that Bob was in the right place at the right time and hasn't looked back since. If he had have looked back, he would have seen discerning music lovers running away as fast as they could. I actually felt sorry for the band as they would have had to put up with his self-righteous, insincere droning for a while tour: isn't that abuse, surely?

But now, Bob has finally realised the Vietnam War has finished, and has probably run out of money. Hence his recent announcement that he'd be recording a voice set for the TomTom Satnav system(!), in what the BBC carefully described as his ..raspy, nasally tones, - god help us - and recently he's produced some "paintings" which are reportedly selling for 6 figures! You can catch the exhibition in London if you really want to, but unless your appreciation of art ends at Painting By Numbers, give it a miss. The gallery President allegedly stated that "This is an incredible opportunity for viewing this powerful body of work which gives an insight into the artist's soul". Oh dear.. And by all accounts he did the drawings between '89 and '92 and has now got round to colouring them in.

Bob has actually taking the piss for years, with a long, introspective break in between - presumably to discover himself - and he's picking up where he left off, taking, as they say, a new career direction. The only good thing about his new venture in art is that we don't have to listen to him sing, but don't tell him I said that; he may just decide to combine the two.

Caught on camera - up yours, Harrow!..
A big two fingers to operator PA309 at Harrow Council who tracked and photographed me driving in a bus lane in Camrose Avenue on the 15th (even though the lane had cycle track markings!). I'm not contesting it as they've sent me a very clear picture of the back end of my car, and now I'm 60 quid lighter. What intrigues me though is when you consider I was travelling at around 20mph due to the diabolical traffic, the picture is exceptionally clear. Now contrast this with the average CCTV image of criminals caught on CCTV committing vandalism and crimes against the person, then there's no comparison. Maybe that's because CCTV operators make money out of penalty charges and nothing at all out of people crime. Cunts.

Yet another UK taxpayer bailout planned..
Although my alleged career as a software developer pays the rent I'm getting rather excited at the prospect of my new role in running a major bank. Yes, as a UK taxpayer I've been subsiding these avaricious lame ducks which seem to need ever more of my money, despite having expertly drained my wallet over the years. Now it seems I'm to "invest" in the Olympic Media Centre, which according to a report in the Press Gazette "will receive UKP 135million of the taxpayers money". I'm presuming that if that's the case, as someone who's  financing the centre as well as being a subscription paying member of the NUJ, that means I'll be able to use the facilities when the 2012 Gravy Train pulls up in London. Well, I think we both know the answer to that one!

So why the need for a bailout this time? The centre was originally costed at UKP355million and was to be part-funded by the private sector, but of course now that the Recession is upon us, that same private sector is no longer in a position to do that. Rather than lose face, our government has dived in (into our pockets) to save the day and has come up with this rescue plan. The Gazette goes on to state that "the Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, said creating a permanent media centre in the borough would create jobs".. Really? For whom? Okay, so there'd naturally be job creation while the White Elephant was being built, but afterwards? Mr Pipe has obviously not been following the rapid decline and headcount-reduction programmes of the News Industry, and surely the high-profile move of a shedload of BBC people to Manchester must be telling him that cheap though the East End is, it ain't as cheap as Up North! The move has apparently even prompted the Lib Dems to suggest that "..it may be time to scale back": not that Nu Labour ever listens to other parties.

Oh, and if that wasn't enough, this sum represents part of a UKP 460million package to keep the Olympic building project on track: how much more can the UK taxpayer stand, and is the poisoned chalice of the Olympics really worth it? Comments please!

A strong new President. Hell yeah!..
Obama euphoria continues in the US, if not worldwide, and the ears of millions are hanging on the words of one man. He's been thrust into the limelight and now has an awesome task before him: will he be up to the job or will he start well and finish badly? Personally I think he has the 'X Factor' that will make him succeed: he's very different from the parade of comfortable, white middle-class presidents that we've had up until now and I think this will work in his favour. Listening to his first speech he seems to be ready to restart America, and he's  well prepared if his speech is to be believed. He doesn't seem afraid to express radically different ideas, and I know that some Americans are going to be very uncomfortable with this. Elsewhere in the world, the traditional opponents of America are perhaps recognising that finally, there may be someone that they can negotiate with, and perhaps there'll be an end to some of the conflict that's blighted past decades. As Obama made his speech I can't help wondering what the outgoing George Bush must have thought: he never would have had the conviction to make a speech like that, and hopefully the poison legacy that he left behind will be swept quietly away.

My only hope is that the pressures of office don't destroy Obama - he has a lot to give and with the right support I'm sure he can succeed. My only question now is, "where is Britain's Barack Obama"? We have a pale imitation of a democracy in this country and right now Britain is not being led so much as pushed forward by a sickly government that's loved by no-one but itself. Is there an Obama for us, or do we have to endure the existing status quo? Like the band of the same name we seemed to be doomed to continually hear the same old same old, with just a slight variation in content.

Personally I'm fed up with it and now that the US has proved that it can replace mediocre government with a strong hand it won't be long before the demand for "actions rather than words" becomes a noise that those in power cannot ignore. Like Obama's supporters, I pray that day will come in my lifetime.

Censored by the press!!..
It seems that Woking News and Mail have seen fit to heavily edit my "comment", which as no-one needs reminding would hurt because it's the truth. I'm not happy about this and fortunately I kept a copy of the unexpurgated original. Click "More" to see the original version.
My comment in full - censored sections in red:

So now we have a £4million white elephant that's appropriately coloured white: I wonder if that was a conscious decision on the part of the designer? As far as I can tell this worthless monstrosity serves no other purpose other than to cover a pedestrian crossing. It certainly doesn't enhance a now very shabby Railway Station frontage and I have to question the motives behind spending an amount of money that could have paid for a new school, hospital facilities (dare I say dentistry?) or yet more police to herd the rampant drunks that give Woking such a bad reputation? If on the other hand this latter-day folly was meant purely as an ego-booster then the expenditure will have been well worth it and Mr Morgan has every right to wear that smug and rather inappropriate smile. And £5000 for Prince Charles' visit? What must HRH have thought, considering his previous "monstrous carbuncle" comments? At least the building he was referring to at the time had some real purpose, unlike the canopy which in desperation I'm labelling a very expensive street light. The best we can hope for now is that the people responsible will be elected out of office the next time around!

If you're not convinced about the drunks problem, you should check out this link that quotes Woking as (one of the) "10 Local Authority Areas with the highest levels of hazardous drinking, as a percentage of adults aged 16+" at 25%.

Big erection, big(ger) bill!..
At the end of November 2006 I wrote about a huge but essentially worthless "canopy" that covered a rather 70s shopping area frontage opposite a very shabby Woking Station, and the road that runs through the middle. The big feature of this eyesore was that it would collect energy from the sun and light up during the dark hours. Well, the local paper has just published an article saying that this streetlamp-cum-shelter has now cost just over UKP4 million. In addition to this horrendous overspend  it seems that the Council managed to spend an unauthorised UKP1.2 million to cover what they're calling a "series of oversights". Not for the first time either: it seems it's the second time in 5 months which I think is totally unacceptable. As for accountability (ha!), the official line is:

..Mr Morgan took ultimate responsibility for the blunders this week. When asked about the possibility of disciplinary action against the team in charge of the project he said: “This isn’t about somebody not acting diligently. “We’ve had a good look at who’s done what and whether anyone has acted inappropriately. I’m satisfied that nobody has acted inappropriately but we didn’t have the lines of communication we should have.”

Ah, the old, "no-one's responsible" statement again. So with that in mind I've written to the paper (online) who've duly published my comment but with a "report inappropriate content" option. I've also sent links off to Private Eye Magazine who will no doubt have a field day with civic inefficiency on this scale.

Read all about it here and while you're doing that I'll just keep paying my UKP180 a month Council Tax, and if you want to know what an "oversight" looks like, here you go (via Woking News and Mail):

Some of the additional costs run up by the project were: Allowance for extension of time — UKP240,000. Extra cost for diversion of services — UKP52,000. Additional builders’ work in connection including hand digging around services — UKP57,000. Testing inverters to maintain solar panels grant — UKP16,000. Delays caused by Network Rail — £4,000. Arrangements for visit by Prince Charles — UKP5,000. Extending construction to Chertsey Road — UKP15,000.

A Web 2.0 thought..
NB: this does not apply to the A or the IOWLF, but they have permission to chuckle anyway :-) Okay, well today I posted another comment on a trade forum of which I am a member. Looking back at my previous post (77 views,0 replies) I mused to myself.. "Web 2.0 is all about being able to interact: bearing in mind that Web 1.0 has been singularly unsuccessful in this respect there ain't a bleedin' lot of point now is there?". Lets have a comment or two and prove me wrong?
