Worth the wait?..
It's been a strange day in the world of my Sony PSP today: this morning I connected to the Playstation Store using the WiFi and was offered a system update which I installed. On restarting the PSP I noticed a new menu option had appeared: Extras/Digital Comics.. Aha! I thought, so what's all this about? Well, it seems that those forward-thinking folks at Sony have decided to start selling comics (and possibly other content) for the PSP, and it'll work with all models including the original PSP 1000. The only slight problem as far as I was concerned  was that this part of the update seems to have gone out a couple of weeks early and there won't be any actual downloadable content until December. Ah well, that's only a couple of weeks so hopefully it'll be worth the wait. Actually though, a very helpful Twitterer, Psncomics, offered to supply a couple of download (voucher) codes that would at least enable me and a few other hopefuls try out some free content. That was supposed to happen at 7pm tonight but failed to materialise, and I suspect that the system is so new they'll still putting the finishing touches to it.

Personally I'm very interested in this feature: not because of the comics, er, graphic novels per se, but because I suspect that Sony will be introducing eBooks via a back door, and what better way to do than by targetting a very large user base who are already very comfortable downloading content via the Internet. Payment? That's already covered via the excellent (and reliable) Playstation Store which will "top up" your account with funds to cover purchases, and I've used it twice over the past few days. Now, if you add eBooks to the games, movies and wallpaper it kinda follows on logically. This is pure conjecture though but if you think how the continuing trend is toward converging devices then using the PSP as an eBook reader makes perfect sense. If you want a bigger screen then go and buy a pukka (Sony) eReader!

So for now, I await the codes and have just had an update via Twitter that Psncomics is still waiting for the codes, and has just announced that they'll be here tomorrow. No problem, and as it's Friday I'll have more time to evaluate it and do a write-up. See you later!

3 MiFi first impressions .. UPDATE 3..
The MiFi continues to perform very well and I estimate that it will provide Internet access for approximately 5 hours. Yesterday it was a mix of streaming Internet radio and some web page development. I left it to power itself off over lunch and then started it back up in the afternoon for a bit more streaming: ironically the Sony PSP battery actually ran out of power before the MiFi and I didn't have time to charge it up. Once home it took a full 5 hours to charge up, so it's safe to say that whatever the duration of operation you can expect to  spend the same amount of time charging it up again. One reason I didn't just plug it into my work PC to power it from the USB port is that it insists on setting up a new network connection when its plugged in, and that causes problems with existing network connections. One option of course is to power it from the mains while in use and I'll be considering that later.

I'm also "happy" to report that the MiFi has passed the drop test; 1 metre onto a stone kitchen floor, with no ill-effects: needless to say I won't be trying that one again!! More tests later!
