Notting Hill Carnival?..
If you're here via one of my business cards from Notting Hill Carnival then welcome, and thanks for the photo opportunity - you've come out very well! I took about 400 pictures in all and ended up with about 360. I've done my initial sorting and now it'll take a couple of days to just finalise them, then you can download them for free. To keep you going I've posted 4 pix which to me represent the spirit of the Carnival: come back soon for the rest! See ya later!!

That was Notting Hill then..
My first Notting Hill is over and I'm sitting in Waterloo's Reef Bar sipping a nice pint of Leffe. I'm worn out and have taken nearly 400 pictures, but wow, have I had a lot of fun! The atmosphere was that of a real party, and being there for 9am (y'know for the 10am start which was actually midday and then some) I got to see a whole lot more than just the procession. I hooked up briefly with another snapper who explained that getting there early meant that the dancers were awake and fresher, and he was right. It also meant I had time to sort out my settings which varied very little throughout the day. Most of the adjustments were minor and took account of the slowly changing light. It was also great to speak to a number of new photographers, many of whom had bought new cameras and were trying them out for the first time. I was concerned how many didn't have straps though, making them an easy target for potential thieves. The police presence was massive, but at the same time very low key. Most didn't mind having their picture taken and this was all part of the party spirit, especially as one squad were wearing some very fetching floral garlands :-) The procession itself eventually started and them almost immediately stopped, for a long time. Sheer weight of (carnival) traffic I think, so in the end I just have up and walked down the procession and photographed the 'stuck' dancers and floats. I was really surprised to find that I completely used a set of flash batteries for the first time ever and the SB-600 was doing some mighty strange things just before they failed. I'll know what to look out for next time though. Talking of flash, check out the picture of my arm where the pivoting flash kept 'nipping' it while I was changing camera settings: maybe next time i'll wear long sleeves :-) I left the carnival about 5pm and headed straight for the pub. Now i'm about to finish my pint and head home for another marathon editing session. Bye for now!
