OMG what a night!..
It's midday in Central Europe and Boskovice has decided to turn over in bed and have another snooze. Nothing is open apart from the coffee shop where I chugged two double espressos and a wedge of the local honey cake, Medovnik. If there are young people around they're invariably looking tired and drawn which isn't surprising after a night at Hradhouse 2007. My day yesterday was a weird one. I knew from past experience that I shouldn't do a lot during the day if I was to stay up all night, especially for a gig as important as this one: after all its not every year a music festival has a 10th anniversary so I had to be on top form. So I largely spent the day in bed, apart from nipping down to reception to buy a couple of beers (40p a bottle) a large bag of Moravian Crisps (ham flavour) and a bar of chocolate. Yes, yes, a dietary nightmare but stodge is the name of the game when you're up all night-trust me on this one. The gig actually started at 5pm and a couple of no-name DJs were kicking off this prestige event. I decided to wait until 6pm to venture up the hill: no sense in being the first one there. Outside the hotel was a hive of activity: just at the end of the building was a bouncy-castle type tent proudly bearing the Semtex logo. Yes, they make explosives, sponsor music events and make a rather er, "interesting" energy drink. I made a mental note and started off up the 400m hill. Now it doesn't sound a lot but my camera kit was around 8Kg and in common with many of the partygoers the ascent took its toll with many stopping several times along the way to catch their breath and wonder if they shouldn't have stayed at home and watched it on TV instead. I eventually made it to the top though and asked a burly security guard where the acreditation tent was so that I could collect my press pass. "Ah!" he said, "its down the hill". Yep. All the way down, and actually in the Semtex tent just outside the hotel. I lurched back down the hill again quietly muttering under my breath and cursed the lack of signage. About halfway down I met my promoter, Katka, who was clearly suffering on the ascent and I assured her that after this particular climb "I would be around all night"! So anyway I collected my press pass from Semtex and strode off up the hill again. This time there was no problem and somewhat annoyingly (as I'd paid for a ticket) I was waved straight through. Ah well, I'll know for next time. So I was now in the gothic ruin of a castle that was to be my source of entertainment for the night. The structure itself was actually a lot bigger than I thought, with a steep winding pathway from the front lawn (Drum 'n Bass stage area) to a "landing" which housed two more stages. The Minimal Techno "stage" was actually set in a cellar/dungeon which had been opened out - a health and safety nightmare due to a single entrance/exit, but an ideal venue for that genre of music. The party people were already getting into the swing and I took a few pictures and moved on. The next level up was via a winding staircase and opened out to yet another stage: there was no doubt about it, I would be spoiled for choice and in fact most of the gig was spent rushing about up and down stairs battling my way through the ever-increasing crowds to catch the DJs I needed to take pictures of. Light was fading and with it came the inevitable smell of weed - it wouldn't be a festival without I guess and it certainly isn't unpleasant ;-) The organisation of the event followed a now-familiar pattern, and almost all the stall-holders were the ones I'd seen at the Rio gig in May. I must have made an impression then as I wandered up to the Schweppes cocktail tent and was immediately recognised by the girl behind the counter. She immediately poured me a large G&T on the rocks as she'd remembered that's what I had last time: pretty impressive considering it was 5am the last time we'd met :-) When I say "large" it was more like a quadruple gin, and I downed it rather quickly (bad move) breaking my own rule about not drinking "on the job". Refreshed and having had a chat I wandered off to see what I could see. I needn't have worried too much as I'd already been spotted by my "spotter" mate, Tomas from rave.cz - we'd met at the Rio gig and I'd contacted him earlier this month to try and help me promote my DJ friend in Brno clubs. His fellow-spotter, Katarina was also there but sadly not with camera: it was good to see her again though. Tomas bought me a drink (melon ginger cocktail) and then took me off to see DJ Jerry who's a big name in Moravian clubs. Jerry was actually playing a really good set and if I had more time I would have gone to Brno for a few days to talk to him. However, time was not on my side so I took some pictures and wobbled off the stage: I really must be more strict at gigs but with large drinks at just over a pund its hard to resist... The next notable on stage was DJ Javas, with whom I've had a lot of contact: he actually recognised me(!) and I managed to get some decent pictures on a stage that was rather photographer-unfriendly: hopefully this time he'll use a few on hs web site, but whatever, he played a great set and the sound reverberated off the old castle walls. I'd also arranged to meet my ad-hoc translator, Mischa, whom I'd "met" on DontStayin.com: she'd worked with me remotely to translate the DSI photo-spotter card (a "you've been photographed" card that I hand out) into Czech. I had a whole batch with me that night and gave every last one out. Through a series of missed calls and txt messages we finally met at the Sony stand and had that long-promised drink. She's now living in Prague and has agreed to do more ad-hoc translation work for me which will be handy if I'm to step-up my UK/CZ DJ exchange scheme. With luck we'll meet for coffee next week when I'm there. The night was wearing on and by now the booze was having a predictable effect 8-) It was my traditional 2am "slump" time and I decided to just take in a little light music so it was off to the Drum 'n Bass stage where DJ Andy C and MC Rage were giving it some for Britain. DnB has a very mixed reputation, at least in the UK: in many London DnB clubs there have recently been reports of organised robberies and violence. A couple of knifings has also done nothing to help, and many are questioning WTF is going on with this genre. It's actually such a primaeval beat that I think it can bring out the worst in many people, but it works at such a basic level its hard to resist the beat. Personally I'd never risk a camera at a DnB gig, at least not in the UK. At Hradhouse though, people were there to have a good time, and the Andy C/'Rage set went on for an extra 30 minutes as the crowd was absolutely loving it: as with the Rio gig, the crowd really clicked with the message in the music and even though 'Rage was MC'ing in English you could tell that he was hitting the spot. I spoke to them afterwards and it seems that they'll be playing at the Raindance 18th birthday party in London in September so I agreed to see them there. Small world innit? At about this time the DJ I'd really come to see turned up - DJ Katcha is Prague's very own Queen of DnB and she's been pleasing crowds both at home and abroad for a long time. She actually recognised me before I recognised her(!) and she apologised for not replying to emails.. well, what more could I say.. We had a chat before she went on and she told me that she's from a suburb of Prague, Zizkov, where I'll be staying next week. Probably no chance of a coffee but it was interesting to know a bit of her history :-) She was scheduled to start her set at 3.30am but as Andy's set overran she took the stage at about 4am, taking over the turntables with ease. It was interesting to note that practically no-one was using CD decks - vinyl was the order of the day and some of the scratching was incredible. I'm not sure whether this is a price issue in CZ but I wouldn't be surprised. For a person of slight stature, Katcha certainly puts out a heavy beat and I took as many pictures as I could as the camera batteries faded rapidly. As the time approached 5am I decided to call it a day, so one more quick tour round the castle and then back to the hotel. I dumped the 1Gb of pictures I'd taken onto the backup drive and fell asleep before it had finished copying. The night was over and the experience had been fantastic! Looking back, I think that was the coolest gig I'd ever been to: not only had I been to a gothic castle ruin high on a hill but the whole structure had been lit with coloured floodlights. Not only that, the cloud cover was low enough for the spotlights sweeping the sky to be actually seen - all very surreal and something I'll remember for a long long time. I honestly don't think it would happen in the UK: the National Trust would never sanction that sort of activity, but then if you needed an excuse to travel to Czech Republic you now have one. The organisation was actually first class (thank you Katka!) and security was tight but never in-your-face. They'd even gone to the effort of making it a cashless gig: you could exchange 100 Kc notes for tokens and these were used to buy stuff, so no risk of robbery. I'd been impressed with the performers at Rio but Hradhouse had raised the quality several steps higher: what I liked was the combination of local Djs playing side by side with international big names: we're not talking Tiestos here, but the top DJs are big enough to wow that crowd without being divas. All in all though, everybody had a good time and I wouldn't have missed it for the world. All I need to do now is sort out the pictures, but that's a another story. Visit Katcha's site, and Boskovice Castle

Hradhouse update..
Well, looking at the blog and media pages you'd never guess that Hradhouse 2007 is on soon, and as I know you're intrigued about the event (which is after all a cultural event) I've put up an article on Wikipedia *. Wikipedia .. because everything you read on the Internet is true ;-)

Not a Hradhouse update, but...
It's like Hradhouse but not as much. It's a dance 'n band festival at the Rio de Riviera open-air swimming pool in Brno in the Czech Republic. It's cool. It's hot. It's on 19th May and you can fly direct with Ryanair. Why am I telling you all this? Because i've been asked by the Hradhouse organisers to help out, so by way of an intro, please visit their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/RiodeRiviera *. It'll be great.. really! See you there!

Hradhouse update..
A major *HIGH FIVE* to the Board of Czech Tourism who will add Hradhouse 2007 to their list of open-air festivals following an email from me. It will be one paragraph long and will outline the form and content of the festival. "The press release will be also published in our info-bulletin - Regional in Czech and International in Czech, English, German and Russian". If that doesn't draw the crowds then nothing will. I just love it! Maybe i've found a new direction? Hmmmm.. Na Shledanou :-) Please visit The Czech Tourism web site anyway.. not just for Hradhouse!

Hradhouse update..
Although I'm not the promoter of the event, as a member of DontStayIn.com i'm allowed to put up details of parties * that i'll be attending, so that's what I did this morning. I've written a short intro to the event based on last year's festival and also some info on "where is Boskovice": quite useful to know for anyone thinks Czech ends at Prague. So, please check it out and maybe share the link. Na shledanou !

Change of (flight) plan..
Looking at the various transport options to get me and the kit down to Hradhouse at Boskovice it now seems a good idea to fly straight to Brno and get a cab/bus/train to Boskovice. So, 45 quid all in via Ryanair - admittedly via that devil's pit known as Stansted Airport - but I can take the train and arrive in plenty of time. Then after the festival, I go back to Prague to chill, and (hopefully) meet up with someone I was introduced to in November, but we shall see. More later! *grin*

Networking/Hradhouse..
Nothing to do with computers and cables: this time its the word-of-mouth thing that I've been concentrating on for a while now, and which seems to be starting to roll. I had more email today from Hradhouse organiser Katka and now have a fine poster for a pre-event which from what I can gather is pretty much the same lineup as Hradhouse (see pic). So it seems they want to see if I can generate some publicity, and seeing how I seem to be doing ok with that kinda thing right now I've approached an organisation that represents Eastern Europeans in the UK, and a popular Czech restaurant in London with a view to getting them involved too. I'm pitching the idea that the ex-pats of a certain age group will be keen to see an event that attracts some top-class names in the music world. MySpace to the rescue again as well: several of the DJs that will be playing sets also have pages so I'm contacting them as well. Also I nipped over to the local Woking paper which serves not only Woking but also Guildford and quite a bit of Surrey as well: plenty of Eastern Europeans in this area, and all earning salaries/wages that would not only get them back home but into the Festival. Some of the contacts I'm making are also very interesting but I can't say anything more yet as it's early days. In other news, my buddy at the accomodation agency has found me a good deal on some accomodation for the after-party which I'm having at Prague. He's also said that a certain person I was introduced to over there has been asking after me and so we'll have to see what happens next. I get the feeling this is all going to steamroller over the next couple of months and going to be there behind the wheel willing it all to go faster! See you later and check out the cool poster!

Hradhouse update..
Okay, well the "missing link" in this trip was getting from Prague to Boskovice, and I had 2 options: hire car at some 250 euro or the train at about 15 euro, so it's a no-brainer, right? Hahaha. I've sussed the rail timetable which looks like this * and has the potential for a high getting lost factor: "dam si jedno pivo prosim" is not gonna help me out this time! I might nip to the travel agent next week and see if I can get some advice. This is going to be FUN!

Hradhouse update..
The good news now is that I now have somewhere to stay in Boskovice when I go to Hradhouse. I booked flights to and from Prague, and also a hotel in Boskovice. I knew it was close to the castle but it wasn't until I checked on the map that I realised I can probably just lean out of the hotel window to hear the music :-) Maybe I should forget the press pass and just spend the money on a big telephoto: it would make life so much easier! Now all I have to do is figure out the easiest way to travel between Prague and Brno. I see the train looks like a good option, so this afternoon I'll looking at options for that and this evening it'll be finishing off the camera kit prep ready for tomorrow. It's all go, but I love it really!

Hradhouse update..
Some things have a habit of moving very quickly in my world, and the Hradhouse business seems to be taking off already. I've been contacted by the promoter who's considering my accreditation request and in return I'll be publicising the event. So i'm giving it my best shot. I've updated my MySpace, and have emailed danceradio.cz *, Prague's premier music station. Yes, the event's not held in Prague but a large proportion of the crowd last year was from there so it makes sense. I also have to start phoning magazines next week and trying to get an accreditation from some of them: I had a long conversation with an experienced freelancer at a photo group meeting earlier this week and it would seem that its far too easy to ignore emails so a day on the phone is likely. I've also been in contact with a Czech buddy who will sort out some accomodation for me. He has access to some nice accomodation on Prague so if you fancy staying there just click on the link asnd see what he can do for you. I plan to see quite a bit more of Prague this time and intend to do some some night street photography too, so it will be nice to make a week of it. Okay, more later, but I get the feeling it won't be too much later!
