Elonex ONE site is hacked..
I'm not sure whether its just been left to die quietly, but the ELONEX UK web site for Britain's Cheapest Laptop, the ONE has been hacked. I haven't picked up my ONE for weeks now but decided out of guilt to go and check whether Elonex had fulfilled their promise on delivering a computer for schools that didn't need Windows. I'm not sure when the site was hacked, but if it was a while ago I'd say that Elonex have largely abandoned the little runt. Yes, I have to say that I'm rather disappointed (how British eh?) - not just because there seems to be no real software for it, but also because  they've made the unforgivable mistake of building up a massive demand for a product, taken money up front and then practically walked away from it. I'm hoping that they'll eventually figure out that the site's been hacked but if they're not bothering with the ONE then it won't be any time soon..

Elonex ONE update - web related..
I decided to pick up on the Elonex ONE which up until a couple of days ago had been relegated to the role of E-paperweight. I decided to try and install some more software on it, and prime candidate was Firefox in order to get rid of that godawful Saramao. I still actually need Saramao on the box as it manages the GUI desktop, but after some cursing I managed to get Firefox 2 up and running, albeit rather slowly. No problem though and at least I could start saving site bookmarks! During lunch  today though, I managed to install a web server - httpi - which although incredibly tiny will actually serve up web pages very well, as you can see from the attached image. It supports all the usual full-sized things including CGI, so I was able to make a CGI script that shows the server variables. As to what use this server could be is anybody's guess but if I can get it to interface with the copy of SQLite also on the box then, well, who knows? It looks like I need to take advantage of the power of Perl though - it's efficient, light and very accessible. Please come back in a week or so and see what I've done.

New project page..
As I've been experimenting with the ELonex ONE over the past few days, I've come to realise that it's a little box with a lot of potential, and in many ways probably wasted on the educational market. Therefore I've set up a new project page at www.mildewhall.com/ElonexONE in which I'll explore the possibilities and document my findings. Right now there's just a startup log dump but there'll be much more later. Come back soon and check it all out..

Elonex One testing, part 2..
An early start this morning and I'm pleased to say that the "ONE" is still working :-) I've found the way to get an Xterm console up (which means I can do all sorts of geeky stuff), and was surprised and pleased to see that Elonex have included Perl 5.8.4 on the little box! I wrote and successfully ran the obligatory "Hello World" and will be progressing from that later today. I also put on a copy of SQLite and a 60,000 row database which also works very fast! Much more experimentation soon!!!

Elonex One testing, part 1 ..
Quite an interesting situation here tonight: I'm doing some initial tests on the "One" and so far it's not doing too bad at all. The new unit is behaving well and is currently charging up using the cellphone-style mains charger. I'm listening to a 200Mb track from my plugged-in memory stick which is formatted as VFAT for Windows. I tried it out with a BSD-formatted memory stick and it just wouldn't read it, but no real surprise there actually. I'm also using a more conveniently keyspaced  external USB keyboard to type this in on the Sylpheed email app and the screen is exceptionally clear: it'll be a pleasure to use. I've had mixed fortunes with the WiFi though, and this is somewhat annoying: I run two access points here, one being the 'Nomad, the other the protected NetGear wireless router. The "One" will pick up and connect to the Nomad every time, and although it'll see the NetGear it won't connect to it at all. This is no big deal in the apartment (yet) but it will be a problem if I can't connect in the outside world: I'll need to try this and see what happens. By contrast, I borrowed the network printer cable and everything worked straight away. I suspect it's due to the length of the encryption keys used on the access point but it's too early to tell right now.

I've also tried loading a 25,000 line Excel spreadsheet tonight and this worked fine: it was in fact two worksheets and the math calculations were very acceptable. It's very tempting to add ".. for such a small machine" but I`m not going to - despite its small size its pretty packed with software and the fact that it appears to be running a 486 processor (remember those?) shows what can be achieved when a you don't have to run Windows.

I also tried plugging in the Bluetooth dongle I use with the Dell laptop and that wasn't recognised at all, which was a shame as that kinda rules out trying to hook up the Nokia for roaming Internet facilities. Ah well, I still have the PDA for that but I was just hoping to carry one device on the road.

As regards disk space, the standard is to put documents in folders off the "home" directory, and on the "One" there's not much space allocated for this. The most efficient way to organise this I think would be to store all your working stuff on a USB memory stick and just use the internal memory as a scratchpad: this would also have the benefit of making your documents more portable between machines.

That's all for now though - I'll be doing some more testing soon and then it'll be time to tell you more about the actual hardware and Operating System.

Elonex One update..
As good as their word, Elonex got the replacement "One" to me today and I had a play with it over lunch. I spent some time setting up the usual options while listening to the supplied endless-loop MP3; quite entertaining actually. It looks to be a very versatile device and I'm hoping to try it out next week on a couple of business trips: I'll certainly be able to write my visit reports on the move! Once again, the WiFi picked up a number of access points in the office zone (none of them ours!)  and although I was able to connect I wasn't allowed to use the connection to surf: no problem, I'll just wait until I get home and see how it performs there. I'll be doing a proper review and some decent pictures - expect that early next week!

Elonex One: so near, and yet..
Elonex One: so near, and yet so far. I've now managed to get a little further with the sickly Elonex One, but only in that Elonex have confirmed that the unit's faulty and they'll swap it out for me. Tech support only just called back and that doesn't bode well for the future: either their so busy helping people to set up or there are lots of problems with the first batch: who knows? It's not all bad news though and I've been able to have a play around with it in between screen failures, so  here's the early results.

The unit boot ups fairly slowly, but based on the fact that it's running a 300Mhz processor that's only to be expected. On arrival, there's a very clear, sharp screen on the desktop which although small is very legible. The mouse is like one of those "nipple" versions but a lot larger: I'm getting used to it now, but it's not easy to negotiate at first. The duplicate "mouse" on the back of the display is also very easy to use, and intuitive which rather surprised me.

First task was to set up the WiFi network access. This was easily done by clicking the WiFi aerial icon and running a site survey: it found the numerous access points in the block very quickly indeed and I was soon connected to the Billy Nomad. Starting up the web browser, it tried to connect to an Elonex site and was automatically routed to the 'Nomad instead: very cool, and very fast too - road warriors are going to love it. I tried to get it to connect to the streaming radio part of the Nomad and it went to download the .M3U file: unfortunately it was unable to save it to /tmp and suggested I contact the site (E One) administrator. This may be just a permissions problem but I can't tell at this stage. I then tried the "Club Nomad" MP3 library, and again the same thing. Definitely one to revisit when I get the replacement unit.

Undeterred I clicked on the "Media" icon and the ubiquitous XMMS player started up, looking for media to play. I had nothing to hand so grabbed my external USB drive on which I store my iTunes library to see if I could use that. The drive was recognised and attached (mounted) within moments and I was then in a position to browse for tunes to play - obviously not the encrypted iTunes purchased ones, but the ordinary MP3s would have been okay. Sadly, the screen picked that moment to die and my experimentation was over - for now.

The unit itself doesn't openly reveal itself as Linux, but if you've ever got down and dirty with that OS then it's immediately obvious that's what it is. Potentially it'll be a geek's dream - not as a serious games machine but as a robust carry-about capable of a variety of useful functions. I noticed that in one of the menus there was an option to start a terminal session (like a Windows/DOS command prompt) and I know that a lot of people including myself will find this very useful for digging deeper into the machine's internals and perhaps putting something truly useful on it.

Other useful applications include the Abiword suite, version 2.4, which takes a little while to start up but could be tremendously useful. I'll tell you more about the others when I get the new unit which I really hope will work. The media player and the MP3 player are one and the same: XMMS but both formats work well and I was able to play the small MP3 loop that Elonex have bundled with the unit. I've heard a rumour that the maximum file size (across the board is 8Mb) so that effectively rules out my DJ 1-hour-plus tracks, but whether this is just a rumour remains to be seen and I'll report back later.

Other observations.. The batteries are sealed into the unit and appear not to be user-replaceable, at least at this stage. The manual is fairly good but really only tells you about the educationally-biased applications. It doesn't tell you how to separate the screen from the keyboard!! Careful with this one - the small PCB connector is quite small and doesn't look like it'll stand much abuse: I don't think it'll be separated much though as there's no touch screen to operate the "tablet" when it's undocked. For 99 quid? Don't be silly :-) The unit itself looks well made and is really not much bigger than a summer-read paperback book. There's no locking mechanism for the keyboard/screen clamshell but the construction seems solid enough (I.e. the hinge is stiff) to keep the two together in normal use.

Well, that's all so far: not much of a review but for a machine that's dying on its feet and I haven't even removed the screen protective film yet, that's the best I can do. My next report will be when I've had the unit swapped out and will include some screen pics as well.

Elonex One update..
Well, not a very good start! I unpacked and opened up the surprisingly well made device which took a few minutes to power on. The screen was very clear and bright and I managed to set the date and time. Then I was briefly interrupted so I closed it down and powered back up a few moments later. I was annoyed to see the screen filled with coloured vertical streaks, but it started up ok as confirmed by the cheesy startup tune. I have placed a call to Elonex tech support who have promised that "a  technician will call me back": no time given though and I'm really hoping this isn't going to be another jolly round of sending back dead boxes and waiting for a working version to arrive. Maybe there's a reset button somewhere but there doesn't appear to be. We'll see..

Elonex One update..
It's arrived! It was sitting in the mail room this morning and filling up the pigeon hole. I haven't fully unwrapped it but my first impression is that it's physically quite small, but bearing in mind it's primarily aimed at school kids that's not surprising :-) I'll have a proper look at lunchtime, but in the meantime there are a couple of pictures to have a look at. (Much) more later!

Elonex One update..
I'd hoped that the Elonex One would have been with me yesterday so that I could have had a play last night, but nothing turned up at the office. I then worried in case they'd tried to deliver it to the apartment instead and I'd have one of those famous "We'd tried to deliver.." cards waiting for me, but again, no, but hopefully I'll be lucky today. Meanwhile their order tracking page continues to crash under the load of up to 200,000 purchasers trying to check their progress. More later + pix!

Elonex One update..
It's on the way! I got an email this morning to say that the Elonex One (in black) had been despatched and as it's going to the office it should be here on Monday. I can't deny that I'm excited: not just because of the price but the fact that it's the type of device that I'd originally wanted the Billy Nomad project to resemble. The plan is to do a full write-up over the coming weeks and then see what uses I can put it to: I've tentatively offered to see how this could be used for a work-related  application, perhaps as a bundle, but the response has not exactly been enthusiastic. Still, it'll be interesting and who knows, if I discover something really big it may result in an IP challenge :-)

More on this as it happens!

Elonex One update..
Over the past few days, the web site handling the order tracking for the new Elonex One laptop stayed up long enough to inform me that my order should be delivered within about a week. This is great news as I've been patiently waiting for a while now and am itching to get my hands on the little box. Today I got a phone call from Elonex saying that they'd "run out of green ones and would another colour (black) be okay?". Well yes, as long as it's not pink and therefore I should take possession in  a few days.

But what can I do with a small laptop that has 1Gb of solid-state disk space and an OS that runs in a measly 128Mb? Plenty! For starters it'll be my new "in-between" box that I'll be carrying around on business trips, and with that in mind I've today signed up with the excellent Zoho, "a suite of online applications (services) that you sign up for and access from our Website. The applications are free for individuals and some have a subscription fee for organizations". I don't even have to have MS Office to use it and I can maintain even large documents and spreadsheets hosted remotely and securely from a variety of devices. This will mean that as long as I have an internet connection I can create, edit and distribute MS-Office documents. With the Elonex One this will mean that I won't have to worry about having a high-spec laptop with me, and this should solve a lot of problems.

Reading some initial reviews, it would seem that the keyboard and mouse aren't wonderful, but with the two USB2 ports it'll be possible to add a external versions if required, but this is one of those things I'll have to judge for myself. I might even stretch to a powered USB hub if necessary, but really I shouldn't need to as I still have the Dell Windows laptop for, er, "serious" work. Anyway, I'll give you a full report with pictures once the little beast arrives and then we can have some fun seeing what can really be achieved with it. I'm hoping to be able to add some serious data-based applications, especially as it can be networked wirelessly or via a normal CAT5 network cable. L8rs!

Coming soon: Elonex One..
In the wake of the Nomad Project I've often been tempted to build another version and take it out and about again. The main problem up until now has been the distinctly home-made appearance which although it did the job looked like a suspect device, so I couldn't take it on public transport. Another reason was cost. However, with the introduction (soon) of a sub UKP100 laptop, the Elonex One, I might be back in business, so I ordered one and today got confirmation that I should have it by the  start of the new school year in September. Based on Linux with no moving parts, and not much memory, the "One" has a detachable keyboard that docks with the screen that has all the mainboard stuff behind it. I'll be seeing what I can squeeze into this device and perhaps even doing some testing with "real" software to see if it could be used commercially. There'll be more on this later - stay tuned.. it could be big!
