| How about this for a manifesto?.. |
|
Today, my heart leapt with joy when I read about this initiative from a Government-funded organisation! It sounds like just what we need, so I feel it's only right to share it with you..
The initiative (which will cost some GBP100 million over the next five years) will provide employment for local people: the equivalent of 30 million days of paid work and will get 360,000 more pupils into schools. As well as directly improving water, sanitation and education opportunities, it will strengthen the ability of the government to deliver crucial basic services at a local level. Immediate impact will be delivered through improved basic services and local infrastructure such as schools and health centres, and on setting up cash for work schemes that will provide employment for the poorest people. It will also help to build assets that benefit the wider community and development as a whole, such as roads and water points. Longer term, the new funding will support microfinance schemes to help some of the poorest people set up their own small businesses, and will help to establish a strong business environment, including a credit bureau and effective consumer protection. And it will help to hand more power to district councils so that they can devolve from central government and meet development needs at a local level". Fantastic! You know, when I read this I almost changed my mind about who I will vote for, and surely this is just the kickstart that the country needs to get us out of the economic doldrums and make Britain Great again? There's only one problem. We're not talking about Britain. We're talking about Yemen, and you won't be too surprised to hear that its our old friends at the DFID again, happily spending taxpayers money to rebuild a country that even our own FCO acknowledge is so dangerous that "[they] advise against all but essential travel to the rest of Yemen due to the threat of terrorism, kidnapping and tribal violence. Unless you have an essential reason to be in Yemen you should consider whether you need to remain. See the Political Situation, Terrorism, and Kidnaps sections of this Travel Advice".Now doesn't that make you sick? It makes me sick, and once again, news like doesn't get reported by the mainstream media who are far too worried about Sarah Brown's bunions, SamCam's embarassing old photoshoot and Mrs Clegg's eco-friendly handbag made out of 1000 ringpulls! Again, the government is spending our money on things the majority of us don't want, and to add insult to injury, all this on a regime that hates everything that this country stands for. This has got to stop! |

| UK Aid is helping the Election.. |
|
You'll be pleased to know that as Election Fever continues to grip the so-called "United" Kingdom, steps are being taken by our friends in the DFID to ensure that Nepal also has a fair chance at achieving the Democratic Process that works so well here. In fact, International Development Minister Mike Foster announced on 5th April that the UK will be spending more than GBP960,000 to kickstart the process - well, lets call it a million given this government's propensity for bad maths. The Press Release states that "More than 13 million voters in Nepal will be registered on one of the world’s safest and most comprehensive electoral rolls... The new registration process will store the details of every person who is eligible to vote on a new electronic system funded by the Department for International Development. At the same time, the new electoral list will help prevent election fraud by recording the details of every voter in Nepal on a new online database.". Hmmm.. now doesn't that sound familiar? A government that wants to record details of every single citizen electronically, ostensibly for a justifiable purpose? Of course, this is Nepal, not Britain - how silly of me - but maybe it's just coincidence that we're giving aid to China and China now own Nepal? And what better way to trial a new citizen monitoring programme than to test it out on a society that really has no say in the matter, and at the UK taxpayers expense. The irony is that Nepal's previous elections have been publicly acknowledged as "free and fair", but despite this, the government feel that it would be better to record |

| Public Bills before Parliament today.. |
| I'm delighted to see what I believe to be a record number of Public Bills before Parliament (including quite a few labelled "By Royal Assent"). As the country heads inexorably down the toilet, our elected representatives are working late into the night to get those last-minute bills passed, or at least noticed. Let me pick out a couple that I feel deserve special attention.. Mr Andrew Dismore (LAB) has put forward a Private Members Bill entitled "Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day Bill 2009-10", to "introduce a national day to learn about and remember the Armenian genocide". Er, excuse me? When was this exactly? Ah yes, that'll be the 1915 genocide and "..the decision to carry out a genocide against the Armenian people was made by the political party in power in the Ottoman Empire. This was the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) (or Ittihad ve Terakki Jemiyeti), popularly known as the Young Turks". And what was Britain's role in all this? Well, it seemed that we did pretty much as we do now: roundly condemned the atrocity and along with the American and German governments sponsored the preparation of reports on the atrocities and numerous accounts which were published. So what has prompted Mr Dismore to waste taxpayers money commemorating an event that Britain was not directly involved in, that happened nearly a century ago? Answers in the Comments section please! There's also been a great deal of debate about Britain's continuing membership of the EU, and I see that Mr Douglas Carswell has sponsored the European Union Membership (Referendum) Bill who's purpose is "..to require the Government to hold a referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union. It makes provision for the conduct and financing of the referendum and stipulates the question to be asked". Great! That sounds like just the kind of Bill that the intelligent citizen voter in the UK would support, but sadly all is not well: the latest news on the bill states that "this Bill was presented, through the ballot procedure, to Parliament on 16 December 2009. This is known as First Reading and there was no debate on the Bill at this stage. The Second reading date for this Bill has not been named therefore the Bill has been dropped and will make no further progress". So am I to understand that we've potentially been offered a referendum to leave one of the most restrictive and money-draining regimes known to man and it's been scrapped? Again, if you know the answer then please leave a comment. The problem as I see it is that a lot of the legislation that goes through Parliament is apparently below the radar of the established media and as was the case with the farcical passing of the Digital Economy Bill it looks like issues that are important, nay, key to the ordinary taxpaying people of Britain are carefully smuggled through the legislative process like a paedophile being smuggled into a court hearing under a blanket. And sadly the people that want us to vote them into power are quite content for that status quo to continue. Plus ca change.. as they say. |

| Labour YouTube cartoons: patronising and censored. |
| I've got an issue with Labour's new cartoon manifesto: the one entitled "Labour Manifesto 2010: National Care Service and NHS". This is the one that features the granny who presumably needs a cancer diagnosis and Labour offer results within 1 week. If you need to wait more than 18 weeks you "get to go private". However, as I've pointed out previously, those bastards at NICE (and what an inappropriate acronym that is) will no doubt tell you that "you're in the wrong postcode", or "the NHS Trust hospital that you were going to has spent all the cancer treatment cash on a large TV screen that Gordon Brown needs to put across the Party Message", or that "the drug you need to keep you alive can't be paid for because we're spending all the money on paying for English Lessons for our nurses and doctors"... So I decided to leave a comment, and guess what dear readers, all comments have to be pre-approved so I reckon my chances of my rant being published is practically nil. Therefore, I've done what I usually do as a Citizen Journalist: keep a copy here and publish it myself. Roll on May 6th. |

| Politicians' wives.. |
| It looks like the Lib-Lab-Con political alliance has sun out of ideas so in desperation they've decided to recruit their wives to 'promote' them. Most worrying is the wife of Tory hopeful, David Cameron, Samantha, also known as 'SamCam' due to her keeping a video diary. To back Dave up! She's also pregnant (coincidence or lucky timing?) which means that she'll no doubt appeal to the huge number of Tory Mums: nice one Dave! Of course it could all backfire if the unlucky lady "goes into labour" during the campaign.. Yes, I know its an awful joke, but so is using your nearest and dearest to try and help you get a new job. The other question of course is, will she go NHS or private when the time comes? Now time will tell! |

| 50p tax? That's not solving the problem!.. |
| The incompetent folk at the NuLiebour's Treasury have decided that they'll "Soak the Rich" and raise lots of money to save the country. Hoorah! Well done lads! What they fail to realise is that they *still* haven't addressed the root cause of the problem: namely that the increasing number of asylum-seekers, slobs, wasters and ne'er-do-wells that simply refuse to get a job continues to increase and represents the biggest single drain on our economy. And these fools want our votes on May 6th? No chance! |
