Earth Hour 2009..
The good, nay, great news is that the WWF-sponsored Earth Hour 2009 was a resounding success, and Britain played a high-profile part in the demonstration. Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the Gherkin and Big Ben all switched off. In Guildford, the Cathedral also turned off its floodlights: normally they provide a stunning reminder of this piece of architecture that dominates Guildford, but as in 2008, the building was in darkness. Around the world there were similar stories - a population concerned for their planet, but now will world "leaders" actually listen?

Welcome to Earth Hour..
Earth Hour just started here in the UK, and in my street in Guildford, just one (1) light went off at the appointed time, other than my own. As it was an upstairs light I suspect it was a teenager's/students room and you'd expect them to be supporting this kind of initiative. My neighbours? Well, next door still has lights blazing away, but the street itself seems quite dark, as does the street to the back of me. Oddly enough though, in this neighbourhood I've noticed that there are very few lights on at the best of times, so its hard to form an accurate picture. Even so, I'd guess that  Guildford doesn't rate high on energy savings on any kind, let alone lights! Unfortunately there are no pictures I can show you as the crap camera on the Blackberry is essentially useless at night.

Incidentally, I'm writing this post from my laptop (battery powered), in total darkness other than the screen, and the server is also running on battery: a UPS backing up a mini-server that only takes a maximum of 65 watts, and more likely around 40 at the moment. When you consider that the UPS will run the router and the server for over an hour on a charge it makes you realise how efficient it can be.

So that's it - lights back on again at 2130, or maybe not. I made my choice, and I believe it to be the right one, in fact the only one. Leave a comment and tell me what you did.

PS .. see this time.com link for a comment on 2008's event, and note how it's filed under "health"!
