Mugs Away!..
|
Well, I'm just *so* excited this week! I was sitting at my desk just the other afternoon when a colleague came up to me and thrust a rather large package into my hands. I was confused: it didn't look like a book from Amazon, and definitely not a UMD-format movie for the PSP, but it had come from the USA. I cautiously opened the box which appeared to be full of bubble wrap. And then ... all was revealed! I had just become the owner of a rather large and somewhat top-heavy china mug!! Not just any old mug you understand - it had the Company Logo on one side and "emerging product ideas" on the other. On the base of the cup was a small yellow label (under the glaze) proudly proclaiming that my mug was "Made in China" - so it was a real |

This month's colour is .. green..
The first bit of good news is that the owner of the office block - BNP Paribas - mentioned back in September ("More corporate green-UPDATE") has kept their promise to turn the external floodlights off during the day, and the planet is no doubt breathing a little easier with that in mind. Thank you! All we now is for some of the occupiers to turn off some useless computers and it'll be a whole lot better-the way things are going that wouldn't be a bad idea and would appear to be inevitable anyway ;-) Oooh, I'm no doubt going to hell for that one.. As far as my green credentials are concerned, I'm finding an amazing increase in the amount I'm recycling: so much so in fact that I'm currently filling my recycling crate (see pic) to overflowing in just under a week. At the same time my "real" rubbish bin is taking just over 3 weeks to fill up and I'm sure if I tried a bit harder I could make it go the month. Bear in mind that this is mainly for 1 person and it makes you realise just how stuff we've all been throwing away in the past, which really worries me. The solution in my case is to use my "real" rubbish bin for recycling and confine the real rubbish to the crate. I also need to start being more careful about what I actually buy: sadly, the major supermarkets are still insisting that if I buy organic, or something vaguely free-trade-ish, it gets supplied in a non-recyclable container. Well what I'd say here is "wise up - we all need to pay a little more otherwise we're going to be in real trouble in a decade". If the supermarkets could agree on a pricing strategy and agreed on a sensible pricing strategy then we'd all benefit. On the computing side, I'm well aware that I'm running a phat server 24/7 and sitting right next to it is a fanless mini-ITX server that takes a fraction of the power. In fact it's bothering me so much that I'm taking steps to move my two domains onto the smaller box, after testing that it has the balls to run the software. It may be that it's partially successful but in need of more speed in which case I'll have to bite the bullet and build another, faster one. Once that's up and running I plan to donate the old server to a needy school which can use something of that power: it's too old to sell to be honest but if someone needs a decent Unix server then that's what they'll get. More greenery later..

Green: on TFL it's a colour-UPDATE!..
I got a reply today from the very helpful folk at CBS Outdoor (it's just a question of finding the right person) regarding the power consumption of the DEPs (Digital Escalator Panels). They stated that: "The answer to your question regarding the DEPs is that each unit generates 0.16kw and not 55w as you estimated". Oh dear: with my faulty maths, and the good maths of my colleague for comparison, that works out a heady 160 watts each. I need time to work things out: I'll be back...

More corporate green-UPDATE!..
I'm pleased to say that I've had a good result with the office block flood lighting: I've had an email from the Associate Director of the managing property company, who said: "I have requested our maintenance contractor attend site early next week to rectify this situation. I will contact you again once they have been to site". Cool! I'm happy, and the planet can breathe a little easier. More later!

More corporate green-perhaps..
Some of my regular readers may recognise this office block. To those of you that don't, it's a naughties edifice that's situated in in a largely residential area, and is fronted by a congested road that's largely prone to rush hour traffic. In case you're wondering why I'm mentioning it, this building is illuminated by a couple of large floodlights, 24/7, for what purpose I don't know. Compared to some of the other buildings I've shot at night it's a very poor substitute. So after more than 3 years of looking at this environmental nightmare, I finally felt moved to email the landlord and ask if, perhaps, the lights could be turned off at night or at least put on a timeswitch? After all, the company claims to be Eco-friendly and "responsible" so they shouldn't have a problem? Right? Well at this stage I've only received an out-of-office autoreply so I'll have to see what happens later when the recipient returns. It's a rich multi-national, so lets see how it goes. More later..
