Shooting in clubs? Er, no thanks!..
When I was on the club scene in the dim and distant days of 2007, the worst problem I came across was the price of entry to parties, second only to the drinks prices once inside. Now it seems there's a whole new element of risk associated with clubbing; being shot as part of someone's petty war..  With the weekend shooting in Gaunt Street outside the famous Ministry of Sound, its now become more risky to go for a night out in our increasingly lawless capital. In the "old days", risk was largely confined to drum 'n bass nights during which partygoers were routinely mugged and/or knifed inside the club. This situation was bemoaned by promoters and DJs alike, but nothing seemed to happen as a result. Now with shootings outside (presumably due to airport-style metal detectors and pat-downs at club entrances, there's a bigger problem, and one that looks set to increase.

Although I occasionally get the urge to go to a party, my instinct for self-preservation overrides this and I concentrate on softer subjects instead. At the end of the day, the only nightclub shoot I want to do is with a camera!

It's party time!..
Quite a significant day today as i'm heading off to London for the HarderFaster.net Xmas party. This one's the anniversary of me and V's first real date-I broke with tradition and asked her out to a whole new world for her: it paid off and the rest, as they say, is history. The HF party is always in aid of  a good cause and last year we raised £2500 for the Kent Air Ambulance. This year it's in aid of an HF clubber who suffered a devastating stroke in 2005 and is fortunately on the mend. As someone who's no stranger (indirectly) to this catastrophic condition i'll wholeheartedly support this and we'll hopefully have a lot of fun in the process. See ya later!

Crobar NYC closed..
Crobar NYC closed.. Yeah, it's old news now but it was *the* club experience that started off my current lifestyle and I had a great time there so I was rather sad to hear that it had been closed down. A friend is considering going to NYC and what better intro to the clubbing scene: that was until I read why it closed.. "Crobar, at 530 W. 28th St. — along with its adjacent satellite club, Pink Elephant, at the same address — where a total of 3,000 revelers can party at the same time, was the  first target of police who were armed with the order signed by State Supreme Court Justice Louis B. York ... Crobar was closed because in the past year it had 15 narcotics violations and 22 State Liquor Authority violations. There were nine violent incidents — in July two women were shot in the leg inside the club,”. Okayyyy.. well that puts things into perspective, and although the selling of booze to underage drinkers is universal, I 'd say that the shootings were a bit OTT. Never mind.. it was fun while it lasted and in common with the previous thread it's just time to move on to the next party. L8rs!

Bye Bye DSI +2 days..
Its now been a couple of days since I left DSI and predictably there's been some reaction. I'm really pleased to say that many people I knew from the site have sent me messages of support, and "sorry to see you go". A couple have emailed me privately to enquire further and have been genuinely shocked when I've told them the reason. Sadly though I've still not heard anything from DSI admin despite posting my web site address and cellphone number - they already knew my email address. I'll be  intrigued to see if there's any comment from DSI admin/management: if it happens I'll post it here..

Lifestyle change..
Regular readers will know that I underwent a significant lifestyle change in 2006 :-) and I anticipated that 2007 would be a year of "settling down a bit": after all, countless trips to Europe (thanx plastic!) could surely not be repeated? Well no, but recent events have conspired against me and I now find my clubbing diary filling up at an alarming rate. The good news is that these are all in the UK so I no longer have to worry about booking flights, but finding time to fit them all in is  starting to be problematic. Although a week ago my next gig was to be Stockport to see my nephew's band play on the 31st March, I now find myself going to Ministry of Sound on a very cheap ticket, followed by Tiesto at Alexandra Palace on April 20th. Believe me, that's not a cheap ticket but it will be an experience not to be missed especially with a 10,000 capacity standing-only crowd! Better make sure i'm at the front. And there's the rub, as they say.. yes, it's the old chestnut of taking my camera. Having had Tiesto added as a "friend" on MySpace and having received an email from his promoters after I left a grumpy message for him about lack of communication, it remains to be seen whether I take in the compact or the long-suffering Fuji S9500. Following a brief discussion on DSI last night, a couple of said that we had trouble coming to terms with a business model that went something like: "US" - we'll come along to your expensive gig at our own expense with our self-financed high-spec cameras and take your picture. Then we'll offer the pictures back to you at no cost but we'd like to be credited for the pictures if you use them. And/or we'd like to put them on our web sites along with a write-up so that thousands of visitors can see what a great time we had, and they'll be up there for the foreseeable future because we get lots of hits as a result (and they're good pictures). "THEM" - we know that no there's no thing as bad publicity but we're going to ignore your emails anyway; if you keep emailing us often enough we'll consider your request but only if you guarantee you can get one or two of your pictures published in a real-world magazine which people have to buy, have a circulation of 73,008 (NME average, ABC figures) and an issue life of 1 week. Someone has to be pulling my plonker!!! So I emailed Ally Pally last night along with the generic PrimeTime Management email address and CCing Rogier H at PrimeTime asking for permission. When/if I get a reply back I'll publish it here. If it's the answer I'm expecting I'll then put the above argument to Mr T on MySpace and DSI and see what the reaction is. Later !

La Vita epilogue..
Well.. the night went extremely well, and I shot 400 pictures. The camera performed well although I'm getting increasingly annoyed with its abysmal night vision handling. Fuji have since acknowledged this by brightening it in the newer S9600. Links to the pics are in "more". The gig finished at 3.30am and there was no after-party, so all that remained was to walk back to Waterloo Station. Luckily S knew the way and there weren't too many weirdos about. London is a city that likes its sleep and  in that respect is disappointing. It was great in Prague to come out of the Karlovy Lazsne club at 6.30am, blinking in the bright sunlight of a new day and hopefully it'll happen over here eventually. As to how much was raised I should know by the end of the weekend as there are still some events going on. What I can tell you is that about 1,000 people managed to squeeze into The Sin and party'd like there was no tomorrow. It was great to be there and I wouldn't have missed it for the world! You can see pics here and here.

Still awake somehow..
Ha! Well despite the day/night/day i've somehow managed to stay awake (obviously because I'm typing this). Mind you, it's taken 5 espressos (2 x doubles + 1 single) and a high-cal double cheescake dessert slice from Zart's who have seen me twice today. I was flagging a bit at about 3pm but a shot of the hot, bitter brown water that passes for coffee at work put me right and I survived the day. I managed to get a few pics put up on DSI and the rest will be up this weekend. For you easger people  there's a link here

Clubbing update..
Off to The Sin in London tomorrow night for the La Vita charity launch party: been advised to get there early so its the 8pm train and then join the queue :-) Saturday night is a warehouse event also in London (EC) held in what will be yet another new office block. Rough and ready I suspect, but both gigs will have good photo opportunities I think. Not sure what happened to the Remix Bar - did it open or was there a problem with the council? Please let me know..
