Being watched..
Following my complaint to Cuill's IP address owners, I can't help noticing that one of their automated crawlers has been reading my blog every hour, presumably looking for updates. So here's a big HELLO from me to cogentco.com :-) hope you find what you're looking for guys! If not, you could always reply to my emails..

CUILL have responded..
Shortly after I got home tonight, an email arrived from the crawler manager at CUILL.com, apologising for the intrusion and stressing that they don't attack web sites, only visit based on links they find on the web. He also said that "recently we have seen a number of crawlers masquerading as Twiceler, so please check that the IP address of the crawler in question is one of ours" - well I did, and it is, so it sounds like they're aware of the problem but still haven't fixed it. Maybe the email  of complaint to the companies that manage their IP addresses has caused them to finally wake up, or the email to the founder's personal email address. Whatever it is though, the 'net community's webmasters are up in arms about it and I predict a very bumpy ride for the company, especially as I've just been contacted by a famous online magazine who want to use my experience in a blog article . More later (but not too much later I suspect)...

CUILL are intrusive..
Although it's good to have regular visitors to a web site, some are distinctly more welcome than others. One unwelcome visitor is from a Russian site and is trying to insert porn site addresses into my logs in the hope that they'll be publicly visible: not a chance, and although it's taken a while I've now blocked them. The biggest problem now though is a search-engine web crawler run by CUILL.COM: this pile of shit software has recorded 9000 hits (and counting) in just 5 days, despite the  fact that I've banned it from the site. It refuses to be told though, and keeps on visiting, only to be refused entry. It's like asking an annoying door-to-door salesman not to call, but they keep coming back.

So, CUILL have been emailed several times and have ignored me, and today I've sent a warning fax which has been received: whether they'll act on it I don't know, but I hope they will as it's eating my bandwidth, which,, incidentally I pay for myself. Not only that, they're actually sucking up output from my spam trap in a part of the site they're not even supposed to be in, so god knows what kind of data their system is filling up with!! If they refuse to comply with my reasonable (and so far polite) requests I'll be sending an email to their Venture Capital providers: after all, if a company can raise a $25 million loan they ought to at least spend the money responsibly. As a final note, I hear that CUILL's shitty crawler has now been banned from 10,000 web sites already: not exactly an auspicious start for a new business, and that's a heck of a lot of money to pay back if the business folds.
