GeoTagging test..
This is an example of how SatNav can get it so spectacularly wrong: attached to this blog entry is a picture of a beer in the pub. However, the SatNav has geotagged it as being on a motorway. Let's hope this was an isolated incident! So, if my testing has worked there should be a link underneath the image that will let you click through to a Google Map (I hope).

Geotagging with the Blackberry Curve 8310..
The upgrade of the Blackberry desktop and device software to version 4.5 has been more than worthwhile, and the new geotagging feature is going to be very useful indeed. I went out at lunchtime and took a couple of pictures of Woking, ensuring that the Geotagging option was enabled. I'm not sure at this stage whether the GPS falls back to local GPRS if it can't find satellites and if you're roaming abroad then it would be advisable to find out before you go.. Anyhow, it took a few minutes of walking up and down before the "satellite found" icon came up and  I was able to record my location within the EXIF data in the image. The handset is actually very directional as regards getting a satellite location fix is concerned and I suspect that it could be problematic in very built-up areas or woodlands. Still, that's not unreasonable and many "real" GPS units have this same problem. What I especially liked though was the fact that it recorded a whole host of other data too: if I wanted the same data on my Nikon D200 I'd be paying at least £400 for a bulky add-on that needed yet more power, but the Blackberry's packed it all in to a very small space. Here's what's available:

[GPS]
GPS Version ID = 32, 32, 30, 30
GPS Latitude Ref = North latitude
GPS Latitude = 51°19'3.18"
GPS Longitude Ref = West longitude
GPS Longitude = 0°33'38.64"
GPS Altitude Ref = 00
GPS Altitude = 88m
GPS Speed Ref = Kilometers per hour
GPS Speed = 0
GPS Track Ref = True direction
GPS Track = 90.68

Impressive eh? And now I need to find a way of extracting EXIF data from blog images so that these can automatically located on a Google Map. Technology's great fun when it works, and this case it works really well!

Blackberry device software upgrade..
I just upgraded my Blackberry to the latest version of both desktop and phone software: this represents a jump from version 4.2 to 4.5, the best part of which is the new ability to properly handle HTML email. For anyone who's not seen the Blackberry email client, it's text-based and horrible: don't get me wrong, it does the job very well but it won't render HTML tags correctly. The new release should do just that. Right now it's done the upgrade and is "connecting to device": I hope that means it's worked. More later!

The Blackberry Little Cassette problem..
I've had the Blackberry Curve 8310 for a couple of weeks now, and am becoming very impressed by the power of such a small device, even to the extent of not missing the Nokia! Today however, I came across a new symbol on the display, resembling a small, black Compact Cassette(Tm), and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't make it go away. A search proved fairly fruitless, but I eventually came up with a solution, so if you have the same problem here's what to do.. The "problem" is caused by an  outstanding voicemail, and despite the fact that you have received one, listened to it and deleted it, the bloody thing won't go away. The fix is to phone your number and leave another voicemail: then call up your voicemail as usual and listen to the message all the way through. Once you've done that you can delete it as normal, and the "cassette" should disappear.

What seems to happen is that there's a problem somewhere (in the Blackberry?) that decides that you still have a voicemail unless it's listened to all the way through: if you're like me you sometimes get those silent voicemails and just delete them before they've finished playing. The Blackberry is obviously protecting you from yourself but not quite in the right way. So now you know the probable cause and the solution as well, you should be free of that annoying symbol.
