Signalling problems at Havant..
There were major delays on the trains yesterday due to signalling problems in the Havant area, and as I travelled home last night encountered 3 backed-up trains at Worplesdon. I assumed that they'd have it fixed overnight, but it seems that nearly 24 hours after the fault was announced it's still there! One has to wonder whether this a fault of major proportions, or whether all the cutbacks..

Farnborough Air Show 2010 pictures..
This year's Farnborough Air Show represented a great photo-opportunity, and I took full advantage of it. I decided to shoot in both JPEG and RAW modes on the camera, giving me greater flexibility when post-processing. In effect the JPEG s gave me a quick view of the pictures and I could then work on the larger RAW images at my leisure. So I've ended up with..

I couldn't resist this one..
I'm indebted to the BBC for bringing my attention to news of a takeover of one my previous employers. It seems that SSL International, makers of Durex condoms, is to be sold to Reckitt Benckiser, who make "Cillit Bang" cleaner and "Finish" dishwasher tablets. It's also noteworthy that Reckitt also make "Vanish". To be honest folks, there are so many jokes in this I don't know where to start, but at least it's given me a good laugh for the day :-) Link to the BBC in "More"....

Hot and steamy..
Today it's one of those hot and steamy days that's such a typical part of our British summers, and i'm really hoping it will improve on Thursday when I have a day off to attend the Farnborough airshow. I spent a day at the weekend sorting out my camera kit which i've managed to get down to about 30 pounds in weight: lucky for me then that it'll be a 10 hour day, and hopefully the opportunity to photograph some of the world's most advanced aircraft close-up will make up for it. Sadly I won't be there to see the Boeing 787 fly, and there'll be no MIGs either, but there should be some other good photo opportunities to make up for it. So tonight i'm starting the battery-charging marathon as leaving it until Wednesday night would not leave enough time.. Should be a fun day, and i'll try and post pix via Twitpics. See ya later!

Sack Andrew Mitchell!..
I see that as the war in Afghanistan continues, and an ever-increasing number of our troops are coming back in wooden boxes, the International Development Minister, Andrew Mitchell has decided that British taxpayers are not spending enough there: so he's somehow managed to convince Dave and Nick to increase aid spending by up to 40% which will no doubt see the Taliban jumping for joy (only they probably don't do things like that..

Our Man in the Middle East UPDATE..
I did receive an email update from the Met for my Freedom of Information Act, and to their credit it was very detailed: sadly though, it didn't give me the answer. Needless to say I'm sad that Information is only Free as long as it's not contentious.. I'll post some more information soon.

Hello, Android..
I've always fancied trying out Google's Android operating system, but the barrier has always been the need to have an Android phone or device which meant spending more money that I didn't have. So you can imagine my delight when a geek web site published a howto guide for setting up an emulator; even more so when I found out there was a version for Linux! So I got down to it and installed the SDK, Java (yuck) and the emulator itself. And i'm pleased to say that after a..

Our Man in the Middle East UPDATE..
Today represents the revised deadline to my Freedom of Information Act question to the Metropolitan Police asking "how much it had cost to guard Tony Blair and Family since he left office, and who was paying for it". Of course, as I write this it's not even 8am so there's plenty of time left: however it's all about the principle.. Ironically though, the Daily Mail..

Student grant..
I'm watching with interest the current debate over novel new ways to get our next generation of potential graduates into pre-career debt and have to wonder why a country in such poor shape is so intent on penalising people that want to succeed. It seems to me that once again, no-one in authority has the knowledge nor foresight to actually devise a formula that works, and instead we may end up producing the next intake of McDonalds workers, albeit some very intelligent ones. I would have thought that as Broken Britain still seems to be seeing an ever-increasing body of NEETS who will never aspire to anything other than 'more benefits', it would be in our interest to encourage those that want to better themselves. Sadly, 13 years of Nu Liebour seems to have quashed that ethic and now we're left to pick up the pieces. I hope it is not too late to find a solution!

Invest in HD TV? Not based on those commercials!..
I have to admit that I really don't watch a lot of TV, but as a bit of a geek I'm well aware of all the hype surrounding the impending HDTV revolution. However, I actually have what I consider to be a suitable HD "TV" - my laptop, and with the recent acquisition of an Hauppage USB stick and aerial I can watch the same crap content but in glorious High Definition. But then of course, they have to sell it to you, and of course they've come up with a series of TV commercials.. According to the Freeview folk..

UK Parliament Foreign Prisoners Repatriation Bill.
AT LAST, there's a breath of fresh air from Parliament - namely, the UK Parliament Foreign Prisoners (Repatriation) Bill which is up for its first reading by the Conservative MP for Kettering, Mr Philip Hollobone. This bill (or something like it) is long overdue and basically states that if a foreign national commits a crime in the UK,..

Off the radar..
Is it really 6 months since an earthquake ripped the island of Haiti apart? Is it really 6 months since the media and its mother dropped whatever it was covering at the time and descended on that same island in droves, confident in the knowledge that this would fill the content gap, and then some. And didn't the Nations of the Free World tug at peoples' heart strings to raise $5 billion in aid? Yes,..

Why Britain is truly broken..
Well, here's the headline in the Telegraph: "Criminals 'can't be kept in jail just to protect public'", and here's the standfirst: "Murders committed by prisoners on early release may have to be accepted as part of attempts to cut costs, watchdog suggests". I really don't think I need to write any more: this country is rotten to the core and what the "watchdog" has said is deeply insulting to me as a law-abiding, taxpaying citizen. There's a link after the jump.....

Watch out for the Nationwide scammers..
Just a heads up folks.. a friend has had 2 phone calls today (number withheld) from Indians claiming to be representing the Nationwide Building Society. They typically ask for a person by name and then ask what income band they're in. Needless to say my friend told them to EFF OFF so as to what they were selling, we're not sure. Anyway, they will be reported to the police, who hopefully won't all be too busy trying to find Raoul Moat.. Watch out, there's a thief about!

Baron Prescott - a damage limitation exercise?..
Today's the day when John Prescott finally became a Nu Tory and joined the House of Lords. What a farce! Considering how Labour have been trying to "reform" the House of Lords (and you can interpret that any way you like!), I find it ironic. Of course, it may just be..

Write a letter..
I get the feeling that with the latest revelation in the Raoul Moat saga that the man has not only found time to evade the Police, but he's also had time to write his (presumably) ex-girlfriend another letter. He's not had time to post it though, so presumably they'll be despatching a spare PCSO down to the nearest postbox in due course, Heck, if this poor-quality remake of Thelma and Louise carries on for much longer he'll be able to write a celeb autobiography and get the Daily Mail to publish an excerpt! The problem is (as far as I can tell) that..

Britain's torture compensation..
I find it interesting that the new government has allegedly reviewed the facts and will pay compensation to victims of torture allegedly the Secret Service and perhaps others. According to the papers, Bliar and Miliband may be held to account but I suspect that Bliar at least will wriggle out of it. However, as there's clearly a case of wrongdoing (otherwise there wouldn't be compensation) shouldn't this mean that someone should stand trial?

It's the 7th July..
Apparently it's the 7th July - just another date in the calendar for many people including many of our newspapers. The top story in the UK is of course our home-grown nutter, Raoul Moat, closely followed by Victoria Beckham falling asleep in a lift and Cheryl Tweedy/Cole/Whatever has malaria. Internationally Lindsey Lohan is going to jail for being a serial piss-artist. But the 7th July? Well it's our own mini 9/11 and isn't it sad that no-one seems to have remembered it? For those that need a reminder, there's a link in "More". Have a nice day...

Crosby, Stills and Nash!..
As yesterday was Independence Day we thought it might be an idea to spend it the company of some of some Americans, and so we hot-footed into London and went to the Crosby, Stills and Nash gig at the Albert Hall. And what a night! We got there too early of course, but we had to find a parking space and revive the flagging V with soft drinks (she was driving). As we sat there sipping our boringly safe drinks we mused that the ages of the rock superstars that we were about to see meant that I was in my early teens when they first started a illustrious and eventful career that showed no signs of slowing down: what would they be like? I also mused that the last act I saw there - Tangerine Dream - was also in his 60s.. So,..

Farnborough International Airshow 2004 pix are up!
Folks! I'm pleased to say that I've now put up the pictures from Farnborough International Airshow 2004 on Flickr (see the link below or you robots can visit "More"...). Yes, I *know* its over 6 years late, but y'know, Flickr was only about 3 months old at the time and broadband was for the rich and privileged (I was only on diallup), so posting them was impractical. So I backed them up and kinda lost them, until now, and they're back in their rightful place! Yes, it was..

PSP firmware update..
My most useful electronic device, the Sony PSP upgraded its system firmware to 6.30 this morning, while I was in the bathroom. The wireless download completed in under 5 minutes which was also about the time it took to perform the update itself. Clean and simple; no fuss. After suffering a couple of days of tortuous Windows updates I can't help thinking how painless Sony have made it. Now if only they could add a screen, keyboard and mouse it would be the perfect solution for non-technical users who just want it to work?
